In the Embrace of Two Hearts: A Divine Union of Love and Sacrifice

Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary

The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary stands as a sacred celebration within the rich tapestry of our Catholic faith, offering a profound opportunity to delve into the depths of Mary's inner life and her boundless love for humanity. While the roots of honouring Mary's Immaculate Heart can be traced back through centuries of Christian tradition, it was in the 17th century that the practice became more formalised. The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was officially established by Pope Pius XII in 1944. Saint John Eudes, a revered French priest and theologian of the time, played a pivotal role in promoting this devotion, recognizing Mary's unique role in the divine plan of salvation and her intimate union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Through his writings and teachings, Saint John Eudes sought to deepen our understanding of Mary's Immaculate Heart, emphasizing her unparalleled purity and profound love for her Son and all humanity.

“You must never separate what God has so perfectly united. So closely are Jesus and Mary bound up with each other that whoever beholds Jesus sees Mary; whoever loves Jesus, loves Mary; whoever has devotion to Jesus, has devotion to Mary.” Saint John Eudes

In this profound reflection by Saint John Eudes, we are reminded of the inseparable bond between Jesus and Mary, a bond woven by God Himself. Their relationship transcends the earthly and delves into the divine, where each complements and enhances the other. To behold Jesus is to glimpse Mary, for her presence is intertwined with His from the moment of conception, to His earthly life, and to eternity. Similarly, to love Jesus is to love Mary, as their hearts beat in unison with a love that has no boundaries. Saint John Eudes emphasises the importance of recognising and honouring this divine union, urging us to embrace both Jesus and Mary in our devotion and prayers. For in loving one, we inherently love the other, and in venerating one, we honour the sacred bond that unites them eternally.

Despite their unity, Mary's blessedness as the mother of the Lord will not remain untouched and will face challenges. As Saint Simeon foretold Mary in the Gospel of Luke,

(and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:35

This prophecy foretelling the piercing of Mary's heart speaks to the depth of her suffering and the profound role she plays in the unfolding of salvation history. Mary's heart, like her son's, was pierced with sorrow as she stood at the foot of the cross, witnessing the agony and sacrifice of her beloved child. In this shared experience of suffering, Mary's Immaculate Heart, united with Jesus in a bond of sacrificial love, becomes a mirror reflecting the boundless love and compassion of Jesus, who willingly endured the pain of crucifixion for the salvation of humanity.

Have you ever paused to ponder what it would be like to walk in Mary's shoes, to stand by as a parent witnessing your innocent child suffer and die for the redemption of humanity? How would you grapple with such profound anguish and sacrificial love, knowing that your child's pain and your child’s life was the price for the sins of the world and the salvation of souls? And yet, despite this profound sacrifice of Jesus and Mary, mankind often continues to reject Christ and dishonour Mary's role in the divine plan. How can we overlook the depth of love demonstrated on the cross and the sacred bond between Jesus and his mother? And how can we call ourselves Christians, followers of Christ, or brothers and sisters of Christ, without embracing a relationship with Mary who stood faithfully at the foot of the cross, sharing in His suffering and divine plan of salvation?

Saint Simeon prophesied clearly “so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” It reveals the intimate connection between Mary's sorrow and the revelation of the human heart's true intentions before God.

As Jesus hung upon the cross, in the throes of agony yet enveloped in love, He entrusted His beloved disciple to Mary's care, saying, "Woman, behold, your son," and to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." In this profound moment, Jesus not only bestowed upon Mary the maternal responsibility of caring for His disciples but also extended to all of humanity the gift of His Sacred Heart. In entrusting us to Mary as our spiritual mother, Jesus invites us to draw near to her Immaculate Heart where we find refuge and consolation. Mary, who stood unwaveringly at the foot of the cross, shares in the sufferings of her Son and intercedes for us with a mother's tender love. She directs our gaze to the Sacred Heart of Jesus where we encounter the depths of God's love and mercy poured out for our salvation. In the presence of such profound love and sacrifice, our hearts are laid bare before God, exposing our true intentions and deepest desires. Just as Mary's heart was pierced with sorrow at the sight of her son's suffering, so too does the sacrifice of Christ laid bare the intentions of humanity, challenging us to confront our own shortcomings and to seek repentance and renewal in the light of God's mercy.

The piercing on the side of Jesus at the foot of the cross

Lifeless Body of Jesus: The Piercing of Two Hearts

A Roman soldier thrust his lance into Jesus' side as He hung lifeless on the cross, causing blood and water to flow out from His side. Jesus, having already surrendered His spirit, did not feel the physical pain of this final wound. However, this act had profound spiritual and emotional repercussions. It was Mary, standing at the foot of the cross, whose heart bore the brunt of this piercing. Her Immaculate Heart, filled with sorrow and agony, felt the pain that Jesus could no longer feel. The prophecy of Simeon was fulfilled in that moment: "and you yourself a sword will pierce," highlighting the profound suffering she endured as the Mother of the Saviour. It is from the pierced heart of Jesus and Mary, overflowing with love and mercy, that God continues to pour out His graces upon us, inviting us into intimate communion with Him.

Mary’s agony at the foot of the cross was an offering to God for the salvation of mankind. Her suffering was not merely a passive endurance of pain but an active participation in the redemptive sacrifice of her Son. In her heart, she united her sorrows with the sufferings of Jesus, offering them to the Father as a co-redeemer in the salvation of souls. This act of offering is deeply significant; it shows Mary’s complete surrender to God’s will and her profound love for humanity. Her Immaculate Heart, though pierced with sorrow, became a source of grace and mercy for the world.

This act fulfilled Old Testament prophecies and marked the ultimate sacrifice for humanity's sins. While Jesus did not feel the physical pain, Mary's heart bore the full weight of the agony, witnessing her Son's brutal death. Mary’s heart, intertwined with Jesus’ in a profound spiritual unity, was also pierced by sorrow. This dual piercing signifies not only the physical and spiritual sufferings but also the deep compassion and love that Jesus and Mary hold for humanity, symbolising the boundless love and shared suffering between a mother and a son. Through this sacred bond, they invite us into a deeper relationship with God, as He desires to have a filial relationship with us, His beloved children, with Jesus as our brother and Mary as our mother. Encouraging us to embrace our own crosses with faith and to seek refuge in the merciful heart of Jesus and the compassionate heart of Mary. The Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by a lance, reminds us of His ultimate sacrifice and infinite mercy, offered for the salvation of all humanity. Simultaneously, Mary’s Immaculate Heart, prophesied to be pierced with sorrow, reflects her deep maternal compassion and her profound love to God's children, accepting her maternal role even in the face of her Son’s crucifixion.
