Help Us Free 1,000 Souls This November! 🙏

There are billions of people in this world, and every day, every hour, or even every minute, souls pass from this life to the next. Can you imagine how many of these souls undergo the process of purification before entering heaven? The Catholic Church teaches that purgatory is a state where souls are cleansed of their sins, preparing them for the full presence of God. These souls are in desperate need of our prayers to help them complete their journey to eternal rest.

Save 1,000 souls!

God made a remarkable promise to a mystic from Germany, Saint Gertrude the Great. She is the only female Saint to receive the title “the Great”. Known for her deep devotion and mystical visions, she was given a special prayer by God Himself, with the promise that it would release 1,000 souls from purgatory every time it is faithfully prayed. Especially during this month of November, which is dedicated to praying for the holy souls in purgatory, we are called to join in this mission of mercy. Imagine the grace we can extend to the suffering souls by simply offering this powerful prayer daily!

The Life and Legacy of Saint Gertrude the Great

Saint Gertrude the Great, a German mystic and theologian of the 13th century, is one of the most beloved Saints in the Catholic Church, renowned for her deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and her unique connection to the souls in purgatory. Known as the only Saint to whom God promised that a special prayer attributed to her would release 1,000 souls from purgatory each time it is devoutly recited, Saint Gertrude's legacy continues to inspire Catholics worldwide to pray for the holy souls.

Born in 1256 in the region of Thuringia, Germany, Saint Gertrude was brought to the Benedictine monastery at Helfta at the age of five to be educated. This monastery, known for its intellectual and spiritual teachings, played a crucial role in shaping her early years. Under the tutelage of the abbess, Gertrude of Hackeborn, and the spiritual direction of the mystic Saint Mechtilde, Saint Gertrude flourished, growing not only in knowledge but also in holiness.

She entered religious life at Helfta and became a nun of the Benedictine Order. Throughout her life, Saint Gertrude remained closely associated with the Helfta community, where she engaged in deep theological reflection, prayer, and the mystical experiences that would define her spirituality.

Saint Gertrude the Mystic

Saint Gertrude the Great

Saint Gertrude is revered as one of the Church's most important mystics. At the age of 25, she experienced her first vision of Christ, an event that transformed her life. In this vision, Christ spoke to her in a voice of love, calling her to forsake worldly distractions and devote herself entirely to Him. From that moment, her mystical experiences increased in frequency and depth, making her a powerful intercessor and spiritual guide for others.

Her writings, especially her Spiritual Exercises and The Herald of Divine Love, reveal her profound theological insights and her intimate relationship with God. Her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, long before it became widespread in the Church, was one of her most notable contributions to Catholic spirituality. In her visions, Christ often revealed His heart to her as a symbol of His love for humanity, and she encouraged others to approach this heart with confidence, trust, and love.

The Prayer That Releases 1,000 Souls from Purgatory

Among the many gifts and revelations Saint Gertrude received, perhaps the most famous is the promise from God that a specific prayer she composed would release 1,000 souls from purgatory every time it was prayed with sincere devotion. This remarkable grace highlights the Saint's unique role as an advocate for the holy souls.

The prayer attributed to Saint Gertrude is simple yet profound:

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home, and within my family. Amen."

This powerful intercessory prayer reflects her deep concern for the suffering souls in purgatory, whose purification is necessary before they can enter the fullness of heaven. Saint Gertrude believed that through prayer and acts of charity, we could assist these souls on their journey toward eternal union with God.

Why Did God Promise the Release of 1,000 Souls?

The promise of releasing 1,000 souls with a single prayer demonstrates the immense mercy of God and the power of intercessory prayer. Saint Gertrude’s life was marked by her constant communion with God, and through her mystical experiences, she came to understand more fully the importance of praying for the dead.

This promise serves as a call to all of us to remember the souls in purgatory and to offer prayers for them, especially through the prayer that was divinely revealed to Saint Gertrude. It emphasises the belief that our prayers can aid in the purification of these souls, hastening their entry into heaven.

Sayings and Works of Saint Gertrude

Saint Gertrude left a rich spiritual legacy through her writings. Her most famous work, The Herald of Divine Love, is a collection of her mystical experiences and theological reflections. It reveals her deep devotion to Christ and the profound nature of her relationship with God. In it, she describes the love of Christ as an all-encompassing fire, drawing souls closer to Him through the sacred mystery of the Eucharist.

One of her most well-known sayings is:

"O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary."

Her Spiritual Exercises also offer a glimpse into her prayer life, presenting meditations and reflections that invite readers to draw nearer to God through contemplative prayer.

Saint Gertrude’s Patronage and Attributes

Saint Gertrude is the patron saint of the West Indies and is often invoked for the souls in purgatory, as well as for those seeking deeper mystical experiences in their prayer life. In art, she is typically depicted wearing the habit of the Benedictine Order, often holding a heart, symbolising her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sometimes, she is shown with a book, representing her scholarly contributions and her status as a Doctor of the Church, though she has not been formally given that title.

The Death and Legacy of Saint Gertrude

Saint Gertrude died on November 17, 1302, after a life of profound union with Christ. Her legacy as a mystic, theologian, and intercessor for the souls in purgatory continues to inspire Catholics to this day. Her feast day is celebrated on November 16.

Although never formally canonised through the traditional process, she was granted what is called "equivalent canonisation" by Pope Innocent XI in 1677. This means that, due to her widespread veneration, the recognition of her holiness by the Church, and the powerful impact of her writings and mystical experiences, the Pope allowed her to be venerated as a Saint without the need for the usual canonisation procedures. Equivalent canonisation is a special recognition granted toSaints who have been honoured for centuries by the faithful and whose lives exhibit clear evidence of heroic virtue and sanctity. Pope Benedict XIV also confirmed her title of "the Great" due to the depth of her theological understanding and her contributions to the spiritual life of the Church.
